Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
He stated in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and eagerly await observing their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once headed the prestigious university, announced on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed communications showed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it understood Summers' choice to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the governing body," the company remarked.
Congressional Action
This development comes after the entire Congress of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would compel the US justice department to disclose its records on the case.
The legislation will afterward move to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. The President has stated he expects to endorse the legislation, after reversing his stance on the matter following objections from his base.
Email Contents
A collection of Epstein-related messages made public by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced numerous high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The messages indicated that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the official to prominent international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were released with the public, the former official expressed he took "complete accountability for my misguided judgment to maintain communicating with the financier".
He continued that he desired "to reestablish trust and mend relationships with the persons nearest to me".
Professional History
The economist served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and is still a professor there. When declaring his withdrawal from public duties earlier on this week, he indicated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in the capital where he was a researcher, verified that Summers was no longer affiliated with the organization.
Summers became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which creates ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a defeated move to oust its CEO the company leader.
